Vietnam emerges as a potential market for edtech solutions and services, given its fast digitalization, ICT industry development and high internet penetration rate.
For education, Vietnam approved a new scheme (Decision 131) in January 2022 to encourage IT application and digital transformation with clearly set targets for 2025 and 2030. According to that, main solutions should consist of: enhancing digital infrastructure for education digital transformation; smart classrooms; digital transformation ecosystem for teaching, learning and examination; Innovating education models; Developing shared digital educational content; Developing social education platform etc.
The pandemic and the newly approved scheme have encouraged provincial education authorities across Vietnam to fast track the implementation of digital transformation goals
The Decision has also driven edtech business growth at an impressive annual rate of ~20.2% over the last 3 years (2019-2023). Predictions show that revenues from the sector will be US$3 billion in 2023.
There are currently nearly 1.000 edtech businesses nationwide in Vietnam as estimated, including about 100 edtech startups, attracting significant investment from venture capitalists. Large domestic corporations such as Viettel, FPT, VNPT, Saomai, Mobifone, VTC online etc are also pouring money to develop their digital educational ecosystem. Leading edtech startups such as Topica, ELSA, CoderSchool, Edmicro, Vuihoc or Educa successfully mobilized millions of USD.
There have been new trends happening in the private education sector such as: 1. A rising demand for investment or M&A opportunities in the education sector in Viet Nam; 2. The integration in the private education sector since the big players want to diversify their portfolio while small ones need more funds to scale up or survive. A typical case study of those 2 trends is eQuest: On 19 May 2023 EQuest Education Group announced the successful raising of US$120 million through a combination of debt from creditor, and equity from its existing investor KKR’s Global Impact Fund. The proceeds will be utilized for the investment in the Canadian International School (CIS) System in Ho Chi Minh City, and to expand its College & University system, particularly the Broward College Vietnam campuses in Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City. As part of the journey, the corporation has just completed their investment in the education system Ngoi sao Hanoi, the deal was announced last June; 3. Traditional education models are changing to digital models and towards hybrid models with professional investment plans in market analysis, curriculums, manpower, educational technologies and international partnership etc to see how those elements must be aligned to help them be on top of future education;
According to the Ministry of Education and Training of Viet Nam’s report, the total public education sector occupies about 90% of the basic education system market in Viet Nam. In particular, in the 2020-2021 school year, the whole country has 42,080 educational institutions ranging from kindergartens, preschools, primary schools, high schools, and higher educational institutions, in which: 4,077 private educational institutions. The number does not include education and training facilities operating in other business areas which are out of the basic education system of Viet Nam such as: language training, enterprise training, employee training etc.
EDU4.0 Summit & Exhibition is the best opportunity for your to conduct your market in spection tour in Viet Nam and expand your business to the local education and edtech market.
